Stuck at some point? You might have to take a leap.

In my former weightlifting days, I would see that I’d be stuck at some weight on squats or bench presses for a while, and then one day in the gym, I felt especially strong and I’d give it a try to add 10 pounds. We don’t tend to grow linearly or even continuously, whether in weightlifting, in career, in business, in relationships. We sometimes talk about “the learning curve”, but as Seth Godin writes, it’s more like a “leaping curve”, when we come upon “moments when both feet need to leave the ground in order to get from here to there.”

Are you stuck at some point? In your health, in your business, in your relationships? You might be at a point where the only way to get from here to there, is by leaping with both feet leaving the ground. That doesn’t mean you must leap “blindly”. When you walk through a creek over some stones sticking out of the water, you can usually see the next stone that you intend to jump to. However, the leap might require that you leave the 100.0% security of having at least one foot on the ground. What stones ahead of you can you see, to leap toward? If you think you can safely leap, do it. If not, you might have to do some strength training until you are able to make the jump.
