What are you “becoming” in your innovation work?
I’m a big believer in the Jim Rohn quote, “You can get more than you’ve got because you can BECOME more than you are!” However, I often hear people in innovation (or R&D or similar) say they are becoming …
invisible in their workplace. The main leadership doesn’t even know their name or face.
less curious. They don’t explore ideas just out of a sense of joy anymore. It’s always for “productivity”.
less adventurous. They spend all their time on “very safe or low risk bets”, never striving for a mountain top.
bored. They see themselves as ARTISTS, but since their art is not valued, they just give up.
There IS a way out, an escape that lets you recapture that curious, adventurous artist who becomes visible and even influential. It can happen 1) by using PROCESS, having a step-by-step, end-to-end method for success that brings your whole team into the game, and let’s them share their very best work. Process involves updated methods of old gems like goal setting, asking questions, posing hypotheses. Put together properly into a process, the old gems are super valuable. Escape also happens 2) by using INFORMATION better. We need to know what data to collect, how to collect it, and how to put it into the right algorithms. Information helps guide our decisions, removing some bad biases that psychology has shown humans to have.
