3 stages of feeling “stuck”

In 1973 -- 50 years ago -- Paul McCartney and Wings released the song Band on the Run. The song has 3 sections:

1. Despair. “Stuck inside these four walls … sent inside forever …”

Many innovators feel stuck and invisible in their current situation. That sense of curiosity and adventure you had when you were in college or grad school is being snuffed out, and you despair of changing the world in the way you once dreamed. Uggh!

2. Hope. “If I ever get out of here …”

This second section of the song gives hope. It requires some tenacity and some imagination. Will you start to dream of what’s next, and create possibilities? You don’t need to worry about how to get there, just create possibilities and WATCH. Because it often happens that at some unexpected moment, a “random event” will happen -- sometimes wonderful and sometimes painful -- that enables a JAIL BREAK!

3. Escape. “I hope you’re having fun! Band on the run!”

In the third part, for innovators, this is an escape to a place where you have some freedom to be the ARTIST you are, to create something that might change the world for your people. You’re back to adventure, discovery, curiosity, and love.
